Saturday/Sunday Schedule....

You thought I was through, didn't you? Saturday's are set aside to take care of details outside. I keep the front porch swept, we have lot's of dirt out here in West Texas. I even have to dust our front door down on a regular basis. We have a breakfast porch that needs constant care as well. This Spring, I really hope to plant some flowers. We will see if that really happens. If my handsome prince doesn't get around to sweeping out the garage, I will do that, too.

*My tip for the day:

Make sure your doorbell is clean. Have you ever rang someone's doorbell and it was so dirty you hated to touch it? It's easy to not think about that little chore, but oh so important. (In my book anyway) It will take about 5 seconds to do unless it is in bad shape.

Bible Study and Church Services in the morning and evening are on the schedule for Sunday. The afternoon is a time of relaxation. Great time to read, rest, watch a good movie or catch up on cooking shows. :)

Friday's Schedule...

Friday, already? Whew, time flies, doesn't it?

Each Friday on my schedule it is time to clean my husband's office and my office. Very easy day! If there is something I skipped from the week, I will get it done today.

On my laundry list is my husband's laundry.

Once my sewing/craft room is completed, I will probably add that to the Friday list as well.

I love it when my week goes smoothly, but there are many where I don't get to everything I wanted. When that happens, I just do the best I can and wait until the next week to catch up.

The important thing is to keep a smooth and orderly running home that is a haven for you and your family. Don't be a slave to your home. Once you get on a schedule it usually runs great. But, as we all know, we don't live in a perfect world and things will go wrong. You just move on and know that God is in control.

Thursday's Schedule...

Today calls for cleaning/organizing the Living Room, Family Room, Sun Room and the Entry. Mostly lots of dusting and vacuuming. I have some tweaks on the decor to do, but that will come later when I have more time for that. As far as laundry, just my personal laundry on this day.

Tip
*When I have appointments to be at the next day, I may get a head start and do some of tomorrow's duties the day before, so I don't have to worry about it.
*If it is a really busy day out of the home, I will just wait until the next week on that rooms day to clean.

Wednesday's Schedule...

On my cleaning schedule for Wednesday are the bedrooms. I have four of them, so it is easy to stay on top of things and I can get done pretty quick when I'm caught up on the organizing part. A couple are guest rooms, so they don't have to be cleaned each week unless I see dust that bothers me. :) I try not to look unless I have to. One of our guest rooms that we called the pink room is now in the process of becoming my craft/sewing room. It was sad to see the furniture go and all the fun decor that was in there. But..I am excited about the transformation that is taking place. The room has been painted and we are now waiting on carpet and furniture.

For the laundry schedule; towels and sheets are on the agenda.

A couple of tips are:

*Each night before bed, make sure everything is in it's place and the kitchen is cleaned up.

*Try not to leave the house each day until everything is done.

*Love your home.

*Love the ones that live in your home even more.

One of my favorite quotes is from Elizabeth George, author of "A Woman After God's Own Heart."

You want your husband and children to walk through the door and say "Ahhh, finally, I'm home."

Photography isn't one of my specialties. :)

Lord, help me to always stay strong in the area of building a safe, comfortable and orderly home for my family. I pray that they would always love coming home.

Tuesday's Schedule...

On Tuesday's I have bathroom cleaning on the schedule. I have 5 bathrooms to keep sparkling. I love a sparkling bathroom! Since we have guest bathrooms, I don't have to clean those each week. I just make sure they are ready for guests at all times.

Sam's is usually a regular stop on my grocery day. (Monday) I make sure I am stocked with cleaning supplies and paper goods. In my organizer I keep a running list of needs and the to do's for each bathroom. I'm doing some tweaking of some decor in each bathroom all the time it seems.

Today is the day I usually go to Target if I'm needing any toiletry items. Ulta is on my list too....I usually come out with way more than I need when I go in there, so I try to be careful. I have a coupon for Ulta, so that will be a blessing to use.

Speaking of coupons, I'm debating if I want to give it a whirl.

I also set a side time on Tuesday's to work on Women's Ministry projects. Our newsletter is about due, so I will get started on that today.

If that isn't enough, I have a hair appointment, can't miss that one! :)

Lord, help me to be wise in the use of my time and my spending today. As I am out and about, I want to be a witness for you and be aware of those in need even if it is just a smile. Thank you for your many blessings!

Monday's Schedule...

I love organizing and keeping lists to keep me on schedule. Not that I always do, but at least I try. Monday's are set aside in my Home Organizer as the day that I concentrate on the kitchen and laundry room. I deep clean every Monday on these two rooms. In my organizer I keep a running list of goals I have for each room, changes I want to make and a running shopping list of needed items. Monday is also the day I set aside for grocery shopping. It is so nice to bring groceries home to a clean and organized kitchen.

As far as laundry goes, I wash any kitchen towels and cleaning items on this day.

I have been wanting to make some changes to these rooms. I'm thinking just adding a few things here and there will do. I am working on getting new window treatments. So many ideas, it is hard to settle on one. I'm also trying to figure out what to do in the center of my table.

Lord, the desire of my heart is to honor you by keeping an orderly and clean home. Thank you for the many blessings you have given. May I use these blessings to honor you and bless family, friends and strangers. As I clean and do my laundry, may I be reminded of how you are the one that sought me and bought me and cleansed me to be white as snow.

Weakness for Sparkles!

On our way home from San Antonio, we stopped in a little town called Boerne. (It is pronounced Birney.)
I found a cute boutique that had all of their jewelry 1/2 price! I had to control myself but did manage to get these sparkles!

Tryin' To Be A Ross Shopper!

On some of the beautiful blogs I visit, so many of the ladies shop at Ross and find the best deals and share them on their blogs. So......I decided to give it a whirl. I went one day last week and it was crazy in there. It really isn't my favorite place to be on a Saturday afternoon. I went against my rule of shopping on Saturday. :) But, I just had to go see what bargains I could find. I snapped a little picture of my loot.

A couple of interesting observations:

Security guards at the door made me a little nervous and the tall poles on the baskets were a little annoying. *I would love to spend a while in there and organize their shelves for them. :)

Found some book boxes, like Liz at Savvy Seasons. :) Some greenery, glass domes, an easel and a beautiful bowl that I forgot to put in the picture. The blue glass piece came from Hobby Lobby. Now, to figure out what to do with these items. :)

Fun in San Antonio, Texas!

We took a quick trip to San Antonio this week. If you ever get a chance to stay at the JW Marriott Resort, I would go for it if I were you!

While Jim golfed, I explored San Antonio shopping. How thankful I am for a navigation system that decided to work really well that day!

My Aunt and Uncle, who I haven't seen in a few years live in the area, so we were able to meet them for dinner one evening. It was so good to see them! I have some special memories of them when I was growing up.

A Girl Like Me....

When a girl like me...

grows up without the love and security of a father, it leaves you with some scars.

Scars that only the love of a Heavenly Father can heal.

Those scars are things like insecurity, fearfulness and non-trusting. Those don't really make good qualities for a good wife. As a young girl, getting married and having children were not part of my life plan.

After I became a Christian at the age of 14 and got involved in a strong church, the Lord began to show me that marriage was a good thing. I watched married couples in the church. I saw some not so good examples and I saw some wonderful godly examples of what God had intended for marriage to be. As an older teen, I began to read books on how to be a godly wife and mother. The desires of my heart turned and I had hoped that I would someday be a godly wife to someone that I could trust and love.

When I met Jim at 19, I knew there was something different about him than I had seen in other guys. He loved the Lord with all his heart and I felt safe and secure with him. He was someone that I knew I could trust with all of my heart.

Now, 32 years have passed and the blessings are beyond comprehension! Were those a perfect 32 years? Of course not! But after 32 years, the love, security, safety and trust is stronger than ever! (Those are important issues for a girl like me.)

So, all that to say, when a girl like me makes Psalm 37:4 one of her life verses, great things happen!

"Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart"

I believe He did, by blessing me with a precious husband like My Jim!

How Was It Before Christmas?

After all the Christmas is taken down, it is time to fill in all the gaps with accessories that were put away. For some reason, for me, it looks very plain and doesn't seem to work like it did before. So, along with my de-cluttering and organizing, I am also busy rearranging not only furniture, but all the many shelves and mantles.

When we built this house, I knew I wanted shelves, but didn't think about all the keeping up with the decorating of the shelves. I have 30 actual shelves in units around the house and 3 mantles. Not to mention all the above cabinet shelves. It is always a challenge to find just the right objects and knowing how to arrange them.

Election Year Is Upon Us...continued

Texas is my home, so naturally, I know a lot about Rick Perry. I home-schooled my children and I first became aware of who he really was when he would make speeches defending parents rights to educate their own children. I liked what he had to say. He also was strong in his stand on protecting innocent babies from being terminated in the womb. That was another plus for me. He stands strong on the gun laws, the human trafficking issue, border protection, balancing the budget. He is a man of strong character and integrity. He isn't ashamed to speak of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He loves his family. Can you get any better than Rick Perry? Okay, so he had some flubs during a couple of the debates, he is also human. He has been very strong in the last few debates.

Rick Santorum: I like him. I won't have any problem casting my vote for him if he is the candidate. I hope he can run a country and take care of his family...he still has children at home.

Mitt Romney: I don't know, there is just something about him. He has a nice family. :) I will vote for him if he is the Republican candidate in November.

Newt: I used to be a big fan of Newt. But, I lost it when he had the wife issues.....can't help it. I like the way he puts the media in their place. Yes, I will vote for him if he is the Republican candidate still standing in November.

Huntsman: Not sure about him. I don't have a good feeling when I listen to him for some reason. Nice family though. Yes, I will even vote for him if he is the one.

Ron Paul: Where did he come from? Texas? How did that happen?

Michelle: I really liked her. I honestly don't think I'm ready for a female president. I don't know why, I just can't see it. But, if I had to vote for her, I would have. She has strong values and she is very knowledgeable. I admire her family life.

Herman Cain: Well, I just don't know. Glad I don't have to figure that one out.

Well, there you go. As interesting as that is, it's said and done.

I'm sticking with Rick Perry.

I'm basically tired of the news already telling me who the best candidate is and who will make it etc. etc. I'm a FOX News fan, and I'm about to give them up for a while. If the first primary was Texas, guess who the front runner would be? The news media would be degrading all the other candidates. It's getting old already and we have 10 months to go.

Well, after a day of watching the news and all the political news going on, I have to share a few things, just so I can say I got it off my shoulders. :)

I have always been interested in politics. I care about our country and I don't take our freedom for granted. I'm grateful for the ones that have served our country and have leaned upon the Lord for their wisdom.

I care about social issues very deeply. I feel that our country was founded upon certain principles and if we let them go, we may not have much of a country left. For some reason the Lord has blessed America in a great way. I'm am thankful and I feel blessed to be an American.

I am also a strong Christian so the way I vote is always after I've tried to align everything up with scripture.

I've done my share in working polls on voting day, attending precent meetings and also went as a delegate to the state convention twice. I've written letters, called my senator or congressman when a vote was coming up, etc.

I am a Republican by conviction. I read the platforms of the different groups and the Republican Party is the one that aligns with my beliefs. I don't understand when I hear people say, "I will vote whoever I think can do a good job, I don't care if it is a Republican or Democrat." The point is, there is a reason there are different political parties. They believe and promote different values. So, the first thing anyone should do is read the platforms of the different parties and then decide which one you will promote and put your trust in. Then, such as an election year as it is now, you choose the candidate that best promotes your beliefs and values.

This time of year, we always have several that work to get our vote so they can be the one candidate that will run for the office of President.

I don't like long posts, so I will continue in another one. The lineup for the Republicans that are seeking the White House are......

Friends, Family and Snow!

I'm sitting by the fire reading and blogging. (That is the reason for the extra posts today.)

We are supposed to get up to 8 inches of snow today. I've been fighting a cold the last three days and today is the worst! I have a cough to go along with it now. Such a beautiful day and so much to do and all I can do is sit here.

I had a friend call and she delivered her famous Taco Soup with all the trimmings. She had no idea I was sick, she just wanted to bring it. She will never know how much that blessed me! Not to mention it was absolutely DELICIOUS!!!!

Friends, Family and Snow? (and taco soup) Can it get much better than that? It makes this terrible cold a little more bearable!

My favorite show on HGTV. I love the way Donna decorates and what fun to watch her go to Market and put things together for her clients. She also has a shop in Dallas called, That's Haute. My daughter went there last week and brought me back a fun prize from her store, a crown for my candle! I love it! She said the store was just a fun as we thought! It's Snowing...Again!!!

We had snow on Christmas Day and now it is back and it is absolutely beautiful. My camera doesn't show the huge beautiful flakes coming down. I will take another one later. It is supposed to snow all day today with up to 8 inches. Is that possible here in West Texas? After our drought all through the summer, this is such a blessing to see.

A Simple Christmas...

AYear to Simplify Christmas…

I usually have a tree in every room and decorate anything that doesn't move. This year a lot is going on, so I decided for my sanity, I would simplify.

Tree in entry way. I removed all the fall decor and added a few of my favorite items from my gingerbread tree that I usually do in the kitchen.

I love the top hats and couldn't leave this one out for the entry tree.

I bought this tassel at a gift shop last year after Christmas at 75% off. This makes me smile.

Didn't know what to do, so just picked a few items from my stash.

I love filling these for each holiday.

These look good enough to eat! No calories!

I ordered these dishes last year from Dillard's on sale. I see I missed a cup, better go get it out. :0

I picked a few things to display in the cabinet.

We put a soldier at the front door. Every time I pass the door, I jump, I think someone is there. It is supposed to snow tomorrow, so I will take a picture of the outside tomorrow.

It seems forever since I posted anything. So, I thought I better explain! We just got back from our trip to Hawaii. I'll post some pictures very soon.

Christmas decorating has begun! Before I begin my house, I will decorate my mother in law's home and then my mom's home. Today is a busy day, so maybe tonight, I will have some pictures and news to report.

I hope everyone had a special Thanksgiving and are now enjoying preparations for Christmas!

There is an epidemic in our country and it is called, Human Trafficking. We usually think of a foreign country when we hear that word, but it isn't looking too good for America.

There is so much we can do as just one person. If you go to the following links and read about what is going on with these two ministries, maybe you will find a way to help. It might be something as simple as sending money to help stop this craziness, making people aware of the problem, encouraging our government to enforce the law, or getting involved regularly with rescuing women and children that are caught in the web of human trafficking.

It's not a pretty picture and it is so much easier to just leave it alone, but we need to speak out for those that can't.

Is It Fall, Yet????? (Part 1)

I began decorating for Fall, the day after Labor Day. I LOVE fall. In West Texas, it is still hot, dry and dusty, but that doesn't stop me!

I know I'm not the best decorator in the world, but I have to admit, I love giving it a whirl. I love reading decorating blogs and, of course, decorating magazines. I decorate my house and then I run over to my moms and work on her house for a while. I may post pictures of her house next!

I Won't Forget That Day!

We were living in Edmond, Oklahoma and I was up and getting ready for a Bible study that began a couple of weeks earlier at our church. We were new in the church and I really didn't know that many ladies, but I was enjoying the study and our daughter, Patti, had volunteered to work in the child care area taking care of the babies.

I turned on the television to watch the news while I was getting dressed for the day. As soon as I turned it on, they were showing a plane flying into a building. I thought it was a small airplane that had accidently hit a tall building. I stopped to watch and then another plane hit, this one looked much larger to me. I was shocked at what I was watching. I went to get Patti so she could see. We watched for a few minutes and then had to finish getting ready so we wouldn't be late. The more I watched I didn't want to leave so we could find out what all was happening. I wanted to skip the Bible study, but I thought it wasn't wise for Patti not to show up for nursery duty, so we turned the t.v. off and finished getting ready and headed to the church. Nathan, our son was at home finishing up his school work. While at church, no one really said anything, but I couldn't help but think about it all through Bible study and wanting to get home. As soon as it was over, I rushed to get Patti and we went home as fast as we could. I was worried about Nathan being home alone and couldn't wait to get back. The rest of the day was spent watching the news coverage in total disbelief.

My heart ached for all those people that were killed that day! It is still hard to believe that really happened to America.

An Interview with Grace Fox - Moving From Fear to Freedom

Has fear kept you awake at night? Has it hindered you from saying yes to a new opportunity? Has it caused you to make impulsive choices you later regretted? If so, you’re not alone! Fear is a big deal for many women. If left unchecked, it can prevent us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives. So, what’s the answer? How can we move beyond fear into freedom?

Author Grace Fox has partnered with Stonecroft Ministries to write a small group resource titled Moving from Fear to Freedom: A Woman-to-Woman Conversation. This resource addresses women’s common fears and gives biblical and practical strategies to move beyond them.

Fear seems to be an ever-present theme throughout the Bible. Describe the difference between healthy and unhealthy fear.

Healthy fear steers us toward wise decisions and actions. It promotes self-preservation. For example, we look both ways before crossing the street for fear of getting hit by a car. In contrast, unhealthy fear hinders our ability to fully embrace life because it consumes us with negative thinking and what-ifs. The effects can literally make us sick.

How does destructive fear stunt our emotional or spiritual growth?

Destructive fear—the fear of rejection, for instance—might keep us from admitting to someone that we’ve been physically or sexually abused. Without receiving the help we need to deal with those issues, we never experience freedom. Our struggles might seriously hamper our ability to truly love and receive love in a marital relationship. This is just one example among many of how our emotional growth is affected.
Spiritually, fear can cause us to say no to God-given dreams or assignments because we’re afraid of personal inadequacy or financial insecurity. If we never step out in faith, then we never experience God’s ability to equip and provide in amazing ways. Spiritual growth comes when we say yes to God and “do it afraid.”
You suggest we need to place our focus on God and not on fear. In practical terms, how do we do this?

Several strategies that I’ve found helpful…
Memorize Scripture promises and meditate on them throughout the day and as we fall asleep at night. We are transformed as our mind is renewed.
Fill our homes with praise and worship music.
Spend time in God’s word on a regular basis, not just when we’re in a panic. The more we do so, the more familiar we become with His promises and the better prepared we are to face frightening circumstances when they come.
Talk to the Lord throughout the day. Invite Him into the mundane. Practice His presence. The more we get to know Him, the more we’re able to trust Him in the face of fear.

Most of us feel inadequate at times. You suggest we cannot use our inadequacies as an excuse for not participating with God’s purposes. How do we get past this?

We get past our fear of inadequacy by admitting we have it. Then we need to retrain our thinking to focus on God’s adequacies rather than our inadequacies.

Tell God how we feel. "Help! I don't think I can do such-and-such."
Tell a trusted friend and ask her to pray for us.
Move forward. Do it afraid and expect God to equip us.

Describe this resource and how participants can receive the greatest benefit as they use it.

It’s a seven-week study filled with biblical teaching and personal anecdotes that can be used easily by either a small group of friends in a private home setting or a large women’s ministry. Each session begins by viewing a 25-30 minute teaching video. When the video ends, participants follow suggested Table Talk questions for about 15 minutes. Then they do the Bible study questions together. Each participant uses her own guide book so she can take notes and write answers. Facilitator’s notes are included. The study covers these topics:

an overview of fear
fear for our loved ones' well-being
fear of personal inadequacy
fear of rejection
fear of facing the ghosts of our past
fear of the storms of life
fear of the unknown future

Speaking of what kinds of trails do we leave. I had a little test on Tuesday.

As April and I were leaving Stein Mart, yes, I was in Stein Mart again! :) We went to Hobby Lobby and I couldn't be that close and not go in. They are just around the corner from each other.

We got in the car and I was backing up and my beeper started beeping that something was behind me. I stopped and turned around as a young couple were walking around me. The man was laughing, but the girl was obviously very angry. She must have thought I was trying to run over her on purpose. Anyway, she acted like she was going to hit my car as she was muttering all kinds of interesting things. I waited for them to walk on by and I waved and smiled at them. Her look was even more angry. So, I rolled down my window and waited for her to look at me as she was getting in her car. She finally glanced my way to give me one more dirty look and I smiled and said "I am so sorry, I didn't see you at all, please forgive me!" The countenance on her face immediately changed. The man looked at her as in shock and she smiled back and said "that's o.k." I waved and she quickly said "just watch what you're doing next time." I said "I sure will." smile smile.

How easy it would have been to give dirty looks back and think all sorts of mean things, but thankfully, I didn't.

The most important part is it was a great lesson for a little 7 year old that watched the entire episode. :)

Oliver will soon have a baby brother to play with!

Patti and Rodrick invited us to meet them for dinner after they left, Sneak a Peek, to find out what the little precious one is!

When we arrived, the stage was set for Zoe (2) to tell us what they were having......she decided she didn't want to tell us, as Rodrick said, "stage fright".....so, Patti told us they were having a sweet baby boy! A sweet lady told me, "another godly man in the making."

We are all so excited! Oliver is especially excited to have a brother in the family.

Love and Honor Your Husband!

I made a post on my blog for homeschool moms about honoring your husbands. A Heart For Homeschool Moms is my blog to encourage and give information for the homeschooling mom.

I grew up in a fatherless home, so I never saw a husband/wife relationship first hand, except maybe my Aunt and Uncle. But, I didn't see them 24/7, like you would a mother and father.

Learning to be a wife and a godly wife were at the top of my list and it wasn't a piece of cake for me. I was very independent. I was used to taking care of myself and it was very hard for me to trust and rely on someone else. Poor Jim, he had so much patience with me and so much love and care, he stuck it out and helped me learn.

I read many books and sought God's wisdom from His Word. I watched couples at church. I also remembered the teaching from my mom.

I gave my heart to Christ when I was 14. My mom was in her early 30's when she became a Christian. As my mother got into the Word and under the teaching at church on the home and family, she taught me and made sure that I understood the role as a godly wife. I appreciate that about my mom. Even though, she and my dad were divorced, she still wanted me to know and learn God's ways for a godly home. I am very thankful for that.

Moms, teach your sons and daughters what God intended for the home and how to love your husband/wife!

Craft Day with April

Today was sewing/craft day with April. April created an art piece out of PEEPS Marshmallow Candy. I put everything out and let her come up with her own design. She knew exactly what she wanted to do.

We also took a jelly bean break and we had to sample the PEEPS! Good, but too much sugar!

My Closet Is Ready For Spring...sort of!

This isn't my closet, just in case you thought it was. :)

I just finished clearing out my winter clothes and putting them in my spare closet and brought out all the spring/summer clothes for this year. I'll admit, it was a little depressing. I had several things that I was for sure going to be able to wear this year and as I got them out, I realized, I am the very same size I was when I put them up. I refuse to get rid of them! I refuse to go up a size! Yep, I made all my plans again to get rid of my extra poundage!

I had read a tip about hanging the hangers backwards in your closet and as you wear things you put them back hanging the correct way. At the end of the season, everything that is still hanging backwards, you get rid of. EEEEEKKKKSSS!

Well, I did it! If it is still hanging backwards at the end of this season, it is going; I don't care how cute it is! (please, let this work!) I can't put myself through this again. This has to be it! If I fail, I will accept the fact that I am doomed to be huge and wear ugly clothes forever.

By the way, Wednesday's are my weigh in day. If you care to join in, let me know. We can rejoice together (or weep.)

Kathy, what prompted you to write on this particular topic?

Over the last few years, many Christian women I love and admire have endured difficult circumstances such as life-threatening illness, divorce, death of a child, and financial hardship. Jack LaLanne will be missed!

Nathan is a huge Jack Lalanne fan! The day he passed away a couple of weeks ago was a sad day around here. Nathan was in mourning. In honor of Jack, Nathan had a juicing party. Those that are most faithful showed up. Me, Dad, Sarah and of course Nathan. He made a concoction of spinach, carrots, beets, celery, etc. etc. I don't know what all went in the juicer. He then poured us all a glass and we had to toast to Jack, as Nathan played the theme song from his television show. :) Anyway, everyone loved it and downed their juice. I, on the other hand, was having a problem. I just couldn't drink it. I took a couple of sips and even used a straw thinking it would help. I finally convinced everyone to split mine amongst them. They did. Nathan was not very proud of his mom, but what can I say. Maybe I will be able to drink it next time......Sweet Sarah made Jack Lalane brownies.

Iris' Pecan Pie

1 cup of sugar
1 cup of Karo Syrup
1/4 cup of melted butter
3 eggs (beaten)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups pecans, lightly toasted
Pie Crust

Prick pie crust with fork, brush with melted butter, bake 3-4 minutes.
Mix ingredients in order listed, pour into pie shell and bake at 350 degrees until done.

*I had to call Iris to see how long she thought it would be until is was done. She said about 45 minutes. So that is what I did. I toasted the pecans for about 5 minutes, when I asked about that too. You don't want burned pecans, so you have to watch them closely.

Also, I have not stepped into the world of making my own pie crust. I used the Pillsbury Pie Crust, which I think is delicious. Maybe on my next pie or two I will step out of my comfort zone and roll out my own crust.

Remember the story about my pie's that I am making for my brother once a month? Well, his second request was a Pecan Pie. Several years ago, a precious lady we know made a pie for our family for Thanksgiving. It was the best pie ever. That is the pie Burt wanted. So, sweet Iris sent me her recipe and I made it. Yes, this was my first Pecan Pie to ever make. (I've always left pie baking up to my mom) He said it was perfect! Of course, what else is he going to say? Thank you Iris for your recipe! I will cherish it forever! It is now called Iris' Pecan Pie!

Happy Birthday, Burt!

My little brother, Burt, had his 43rd birthday and I didn't have a clue what to get him. He is a very practical guy and has just about everything he needs and wants. So, during our lunch I gave him his card and told him that I was going to bake him a pie a month for one year. He loves pies and I didn't know if he would take me up on it or not. I'm not a pie baker, but....I would love to be. This is my big opportunity to give it a whirl.

He went for it and requested a Coconut Cream Pie delivered in his man cave for the big football game on Monday night.

I have never made a Coconut Cream Pie, so I was worried. Especially, on the meringue part of the pie.

I did it....and he said he loved it. He gave it a 10. (It's a little scorched, I rescued it just in time!)

This is Burt and I when I was a teen.....he was always by my side. In this picture I was heading off to camp and I hated leaving him. (even though I seem to be smiling pretty big. :) ) The picture below is at Christmas last year.

Why did you write Inspired Design with your daughter?

My grandfather (Silversmith Allan Adler) passed this love of design to me, so it just seemed a natural, alongside a book about the design and subsequent use of our homes, infused with family heritage that my daughter who lives along side me take a large part the powerful subject of "the home". Southern Lady Celebration 2010

Mom and I headed to Atlanta, GA, for our 3rd Southern Lady Celebration, hosted by Hoffman Media who produces some of my favorite magazines. We flew out of Midland on Thursday to Birmingham, AL. We rented a fun little red SUV. I think it was a Grand Jeep Cherokee or something like that. The two hour drive into Atlanta was beautiful. The trees along the highway were full of gorgeous trees with the fall colors exploding everywhere. We drove through some type of National Forest. I can't remember the name. Mom slept through that part; she missed out. She did wake up in time for some serious traffic. There are some wild drivers out there and it seemed bumper to bumper for at least an hour before we got to Atlanta.

Our hotel was beautiful. It was the Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead. We checked in and then went exploring the hotel. We ate in their restaurant and headed to our rooms. We each had a doorbell to our rooms. I was so impressed. I tried to beat my mom in getting ready so I could go ring her doorbell. I've never seen a doorbell on a hotel room door before. Our rooms were on the 23rd floor. I prayed there wouldn't be a fire or an earthquake. :)

Friday morning, we slept in and had lunch in the hotel, then registered for the Celebration. The shopping boutique was open so we browsed around. A hat designer was there and I had fun trying on his hats. A booth with beautiful pearls was one of my favorites.

The evening began at 6 p.m. with a delicious dinner and our speaker was a lady who had just retired from the White House of 35 years of designing the floral arrangements and decorating the various dinner parties at the White House. She was very interesting.

Saturday morning began with some workshops on cooking, decorating and a lesson on napkin folding. By the way, each time we went to our table for a meal, we had a gift plus the latest magazine editions of Southern Lady, Tea Time, Celebrate, Semi-Homade and Victoria!

Free time was after the morning session. Mom and I headed to a mall down the road called Phipps Mall. Very nice. Nordstroms was my favorite store in that mall.

Saturday night began with another delicious meal and our speaker was Pat Kerr. She is a fashion designer and was also given the Southern Lady of the Year Award.

Sunday morning we had a morning devotional by a lady who spent time in Africa as a missionary. She was very inspiring. After our brunch, Jeannie Robertson, who is a comedian, spoke and had us laughing and crying at the same time. She tells stories of her life and they are hilarious!

Mom and I then went out for some shopping and stopped at a quaint Italian restaurant first. We went back to Phipps Mall and then to a Target to buy a suitcase for our extra things we were heading home with. This Target had a parking garage and was also 2 stories with an escalator. Then we headed over to The Lenox Mall. By the way, valet parking is everywhere, even the mall. We went to dinner at Cheesecake Factory and then went to see Secretariat. Love that movie!

Monday morning we got up early an headed back to Birmingham to catch our flight home. These two country bumpkins needed to get back to reality. By the way, I was also chosen to be patted down leaving Midland and leaving Birmingham. Not a good thing! Pretty humiliating! Why me? I guess I looked suspicious or something. I even left most of my jewelry in my suitcase so I wouldn't cause the beeper to go off. I really don't enjoy flying anymore, such a hassle. I guess it beats a 17 hour drive though.

Tell us about the Christmas gift you received. How did it help you to find grace in the middle of a seemingly hopeless situation?
Two weeks before Christmas our doorbell rang at 9:15 p.m. It was dark outside and by the time my husband, Gene, joined me at the front door, we were surprised to find no one there. It was already dark, but my eyes fell on a large, exquisitely wrapped gift. The card on top said, “Mom.” Initially, it felt like a bad joke. Nine years earlier our son, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy had been arrested for murdering his wife’s first husband and he was in prison serving a life-without-the-possibility-of-parole sentence.
However, I am a “Mom” and the package was left on my doorstep, so I opened it. The note appeared to be in my son’s unique handwriting. The note expressed his deep love for me and his gratefulness for what I had done to help him since his arrest. He said a “friend” had helped him deliver the surprise. Opening the box, I discovered a gorgeous russet-colored silk jacket—and it fit me perfectly.
That night I discovered something new about God and something I had forgotten about myself. He loves to interject divine surprises into our lives. His timing is always perfect, but it had been a while since I had been surprised by joy, wonder, and grace in the middle of one of the tight spots of life.
What are “grace places,” and how can hurting people in need find them?
All of us experience tight spots when life turns out differently from our dream. When we face the overwhelming obstacles of life, we can experience the last thing we ever expect—the sweet spot of grace. Grace places have a variety of forms, but some include:

Receiving love when we don’t deserve it
Finding safety in the middle of a fearful and uncertain experience
Being comforted by friends and family (people who are extensions of God’s love)
Experiencing the embrace of God when we have run out of strength and courage

“Grace means the free, unmerited, unexpected love of God, and all the benefits, delights, and comforts which flow from it.” (R.P.C. Hanson)
How important are contentment and gratitude in finding grace and peace?
My son, Jason, is teaching me that I need to choose contentment and thanksgiving in all things. As an inmate in a maximum-security prison, all of his personal items must fit in one small one-foot-high and one-and a half-feet-deep and two-and-a half feet long steel lockbox. He has learned to live comfortably with very little, which brings him a surprising sense of peace.
When I was visiting him one weekend I asked how he holds on to hope in the middle of a life-without-the-possibility-of-parole sentence. He said, “Mom, I have a gratitude list. Whenever the clouds of depression try to discouragement, I get out a piece of paper and write down everything I have to be thankful for. I’m thankful I have two parents who will be my advocates for as long as they live. The average number of years a lifer gets visits is five years and then no one comes anymore. I’m also thankful I can be a missionary on a compound that houses up to 1,700 men.” I’m learning from Jason that I find contentment when I choose to be thankful and when I invest my time in helping other people.
What are some unexpected gestures of kindness you’ve received in the past, and how did they help you through difficult times?
A couple of years ago Jason’s appendix ruptured and he was rushed from the prison to a civilian hospital. Gene and I were not allowed to know where he was and I prayed for someone to care for him as a mother would. He had two armed guards in his room at all times. Nurse Betty was assigned to Jason’s care. She treated him with respect and extraordinary care—and I knew she was a direct answer to my prayers.
A group of people who called themselves our “Stretcher Bearers” received an e-mailed monthly update on how to help with our needs. We were blessed with meals, cards, and financial gifts, often just before we needed extra funds for the next legal payment. These amazing people waited with us for two and a half years through seven postponements of the trial.
How has your definition of adventure changed over the years, and why is it important to retain adventure in your life, despite your situation?
True adventure is seeing the potential of living for things that matter in the middle of your current circumstances. We had the adventure of launching a nonprofit organization that helps to empower our son to facilitate classes by having books and DVD teaching series sent to the prison. We also have the adventure of reaching out to other people who are in crisis, which brings purpose and deep meaning to our lives.
There is a theme of surprise throughout the book. What is one of the greatest surprises you’ve had?
The powerful story of Tammy Wilson and Matthew Ben Rodriguez is in this book. Tammy contacted me after I spoke at an event she attended because my son is incarcerated in the same prison where Matt, the man who killed her mother thirteen years ago is incarcerated. She had been praying for someone to lead Matt to Christ and asked if Jason would try to meet him. It turned out that Jason and Matt were already friends and this amazing story is one of forgiveness, redemption, and restoration that can only be explained in the supernatural dimension.
Between a Rock and a Grace Place releases 10 years after your son, Jason, was sentenced to life in a maximum security prison and includes excerpts from Jason’s letters. Can you tell us how he’s doing now?
He has just taken his 8th group of men through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University Course and he will be facilitating a biblical counseling class on marriage and family this fall. He has a prayer group of twelve inmates who fast and pray for the needs of each other and their families. Prison is a depressing, dark, and sad place, but Jason is living for things that will outlast him.
When you received news about Jason’s clemency hearing being denied, how did you respond?
I wailed like a baby, sobbed, felt angry, hurt, and disappointed in God. Then we saw Jason a day after this devastating news. He was calm and very much at peace. He hugged me as I wept and said, “Mom, this case isn’t about having the best attorney or about having the favor of Florida’s top executive political leaders. If I am ever allowed to walk in freedom in this lifetime, it will be because God miraculously opened a door that was closed.” My son helps me to develop an eternal perspective and that day he comforted me.
What advice do you have for those who are stuck between a rock and a grace place?
In the middle of your own hurt reach out to someone else who needs help worse than you do. When you involve yourself in meeting the needs of others, you discover an unexpected freedom on the inside. Corrie ten Boom once said, “What did you do today that only a Christian would have done?”
As a result of your journey, you and your husband have founded the nonprofit organization Speak Up for Hope. What are the goals of the organization, and how can people get involved?
Our vision: To help inmates and their families adjust to their new normal.
Our mission: We exist to provide hope to inmates and their families through encouragement and resources.

My Salvation Story Published!

About six years ago, I sent an article to Decision Magazine, which is a Billy Graham Association publication. Billy Graham had a big part in my life change. I received a very kind letter from them saying that they couldn't use it at that time. I just filed it away and about a month ago, I got an email from them saying they would like to use the story. How exciting is that? Six years later! I don't even remember what all I wrote.

Long story short, the magazine came out this month. It is the 60 Year Anniversary of Billy Graham's ministry. They used a testimony from each decade. Mine is from the 70's. I was 14 when I accepted Christ as my Savior!

Again, you just never know! :)

His Heart, My Desire is my personal blog that incorporates all the things in my life that I love.

A Heart for Homeschool Moms is a blog designed to be a resource and place to be motivated in the serious calling of home educating our children.

A Heart for Women's Ministry is a blog that is for the women's ministry of Kelview Heights Baptist Church, plus, a resource for women's ministry leaders.

I also have a personal website that is for my published writing. I am still in the process of sprucing that site up.

Purple Toe Polish

Jim and I went to Dallas for a couple of days. The hotel we stayed at had a spa and I was wanting to get a pedicure. They got me in as soon as I got there. I was introduced to the young girl that took me back to get me set up. She told me to pick my color for my toes and as I reached for the pinkish color I usually get, she said, "You may want to try the purple, it is really popular and very in. I know what is in and you should step out of the box." So I said,

"o.k."

As this sweet young lady was working on my toes, I noticed she had a huge tattoo popping through her sleeves on her back. It was a giant butterfly that looked as if it covered her entire back. I then noticed her toenails were painted stark white. I began to worry about her idea of what is the latest in colors, but whatever.

I now have dark purple toe polish on my toes. I may go back to my pinks when the time comes.

Cute Little Fishies

I just have to share. The kids loved their swimming lessons, they are now little fish. *Zoe Grace even swims with a bow.

Home Starts at the Curb

I love a painted curb sign. I believe an address on the curb is the beginning of showing the personality of your home.

Our son's girlfriend, Sarah, painted my house number on the curb. What is even more amazing is, I told her what I envisioned, she then went home and made her own stencils, cut them out, and then spent a Saturday afternoon painting the curb. I love it. What talent she has! Thank you Sarah!

Our neighborhood is a new neighborhood. Houses are being built all around us and the dirt is crazy. If I sweep off the porch, the dirt will be back that night. Patiently waiting for all the building to be done.

Father's Day Cookout

Patti hosted a Father's Day BBQ for her daddy and her sweet husband, Rodrick, at her home on Saturday night. As usual, she had everything decorated beautifully. The golf theme went from our food all the way to how the kids were dressed. I didn't catch Oliver in a picture, he is very busy and fast. I was fortunate to get Zoe Grace in a picture, she is just as busy.

My Weight Loss Journey!

This is the book I read several years ago that motivated me to lose almost 60 pounds. (*The Calorie King book is what I use to look up calories, it is the easiest I have found to use.) It took me about 6 months to do so. I kept it off for a few years and I have gained a little of it back. I am now trying to get rid of it all again. :)

The highlights of the program are as follows: (A few are some I incorporated myself)

*Eliminate flour, sugar, potatoes and popcorn for 6 weeks.

*Eat 1,000 - 1,200 calories per day

*Keep a food journal

*Read the devotional and write daily

*Set goals and review regularly

*Walk 3 miles per day

*Do not weigh during the 6 week plan

*Read success stories

*Ask the Lord daily, for wisdom and strength

There are a few more helps and motivators throughout the PRISM program that helped me tremendously that I will share as I go along the journey.
